Go-Ahead and Netcompany join forces for more predictable train operations in Norway

Train travel set to become more predictable: Netcompany and Go-Ahead partner to strengthen disruption management and maintenance through real-time data and a new PULSE orchestration platform.

Netcompany and Go-Ahead Norway are joining forces to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making in rail operations. The partnership is based on Netcompany’s orchestration platform, PULSE, and focuses on areas where train operators face the greatest operational pressure, such as maintenance and disruption management.

»Our most important task at Go-Ahead is to deliver a train service that is predictable, both for customers and employees. Our collaboration with Netcompany and the use of the PULSE platform will help ensure more predictable operations and a better travel experience for our customers. When Go-Ahead took over maintenance responsibility for the Class 73 train sets, a significant maintenance backlog was identified. This has led to the cancellation of certain departures for a period,« says Emil Eike, Managing Director of Go-Ahead.

A key objective is to provide more precise and relevant information to passengers, both in the short and long term. With a stronger data foundation, communication can be more targeted and increasingly automated, for example towards passengers with tickets or season passes, which can reduce frustration and improve predictability.

»Go-Ahead will serve as the spearhead of a model that can be transferred to other players in the Norwegian rail sector, both on the operator and infrastructure side. Additional data sources and stakeholders can be connected over time. Our ambition is to help establish a model that not only delivers value for Go-Ahead but is scalable and relevant for the entire rail sector.«

Christoffer Daae-Qval, Partner, Netcompany Norway

Maintenance backlog is one of the sector’s greatest challenges. By bringing together data that is currently fragmented across different stakeholders and systems, we provide operations centres and maintenance teams with a situational overview, better forecasts, and a more proactive basis for planning.

PULSE is already operational in several European transport companies such as DSB in Denmark and P&O Ferries in the UK.

As data is consolidated and historical datasets are built up, this also creates opportunities for AI-based analysis to improve forecasting, enable more proactive planning of maintenance and staffing needs, and make it possible to predict and prevent incidents based on historical data, climate models, and more.

Programme scope

The partnership will provide better control over train sets and maintenance through:

  • Increased insight into the condition of train sets, planned maintenance, and the optimal timing for repairs
  • Better execution of planned measures, with the right parts and personnel available
  • Reduced snowball effects when rolling stock availability is already under pressure
  • More precise disruption management

By connecting and visualising data from multiple sources, Go-Ahead gains:

  • A consolidated view of the situation based on data from multiple sources
  • Visibility into both the immediate and long-term consequences of service changes
  • A stronger basis for operational decisions affecting capacity, resource allocation, customer communication, and alternative solutions
  • A holistic data foundation
